Healthscope extends elective surgery in line with Government recommendations

26 March 2020

Healthscope notes and supports the Federal Government’s decision to extend the deadline for suspending semi-urgent Category 2 and Category 3 elective surgeries in private hospitals to 11.59pm on 1 April 2020.

This will allow a more ordered transition to the new arrangements for patients, hospital staff and treating doctors.

Healthscope will recommence these types of elective surgery from today in consultation with our staff, doctors and patients, until the deadline of 1 April 2020.

As Australia’s only national private healthcare provider operating in all States and Territories, Healthscope is carefully and appropriately managing its supplies of medical and personal protective equipment.

Healthscope believes elective surgery can continue to be safely performed in its hospitals across the country for the agreed extended period. The cancellation of elective surgery in the public health system, and in private hospitals from 1 April, will mean more PPE available in the health system overall for the longer term.

Healthscope remains committed to working with and supporting the Federal and State governments on the country’s overarching COVID-19 response. Our hospitals and staff are committed to help care for Australians as part of the nation’s response to the pandemic.
