It's time to talk about Mental Health

It is International Men’s Health week, and it is my pleasure to share my thoughts about mental health in this brief piece. I want to touch upon the issue of the prevailing stigma of discussing mental health issues, particularly in men. I also want to discuss spiritual learnings of self-management for better mental health as learnt from the Bhagwad Gita, which is an ancient Hindu scripture that provides a synthesis of key philosophical concepts of Hinduism and yoga.

Understanding post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common chronic psychological disorder that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. A person may be exposed to death, threatened death, actual or threatened serious injury or sexual violence either by direct exposure or even indirect exposure, for example in the course of professional duties (such as first-responders, medics, police officers) or even learning that a relative or close friend was exposed to a trauma.

Hemochromatosis is an inherited genetic disorder resulting in continued iron absorption from the small intestine, despite normal total body iron. The gene involved in this disorder is called the HFE gene and changes that occur can results in the 2 common mutations (different from normal), which is the C282Y and H63D mutations.
