Why is Movember especially important this year?

By Dr Sereena Abraham

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives of Victorians significantly, with many juggling working from home with caregiving roles, all at a time when access to supports is limited. Many have delayed accessing much needed help due to worries about contracting COVID-19. Rates of social isolation, unemployment and substance abuse have also increased.

There is significant stigma related to mental illness and society endorses stereotypical male gender norms of self-reliance, making it challenging for men to ask for help. Movember is an opportunity to increase the awareness of men’s mental health needs and suicide prevention, while dispelling expectations that men should suffer in silence. Movember shines a spotlight on men’s health issues, while letting men know that they are not alone in their struggles and by discussing the supports that are available.

Concerning signs to look out for in men include:

  • Mood swings
  • Withdrawn behaviour
  • Changes in personality
  • Severe anxiety, hopelessness and worthlessness
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs
  • Changes to routine including eating and sleeping habits
  • Talking about suicide, death, or dying
  • Engaging in risk taking behaviours
  • Acquiring a firearm or other means to die by suicide
  • Saying goodbyes and getting affairs in order

If you have noticed concerning signs,

  • Start the conversation.
  • Listen attentively.
  • Encourage opening up to trusted people such as a partner, close friends and family
  • Offer reassurance that help is available.
  • Keep checking-in to offer ongoing support and to foster hope.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyle choices including good sleep habits, regular physical activity and cutting back on drug and alcohol use.
  • Encourage them to see their General Practitioner who may recommend specialist input from a psychiatrist.
